Projects
Firestone's project-based work is where materiality IS the argument. Each series finds the medium that could not be substituted. In Existential Snacks: Food for Thought, Trump is sculpted from Cheetos, a polar bear from Hostess Snowballs: the object is the critique, the consumer product indistinguishable from the cultural condition it names. In The Infertility Project, baby blankets are constructed from IVF syringes and virgin wool, women's work made from the instruments of medical and organic longing: the material carries what language cannot. These are not illustrations of ideas but investigations, each demanding a form equal to its subject.
The Infertility Project premiered at the United Nations in 2017. Existential Snacks turns the American consumer product into philosophical provocation.
What we choose to make, and what we choose to make it from, is never neutral.
